Healthy Digestion: The Key to Vibrant Health!

In our previous blog, we discussed “Food as Medicine” and the importance of eating organic food with clean protein sources, lots of colorful vegetables, healthy fats, and low glycemic fruits.

We touched upon the benefits of fermented foods, making your own bone broth and drinking more water as part of a healthy nutritional plan. We also looked at the detrimental role that refined sugars & carbohydrates play in our bodies and the toxic consequences of having chemicals and food additives in our food chain. Applying these concepts will help us live healthier and more active lives.

Today we shall discuss steps you can take to have optimal digestive health. Read on to learn more about Steps for A Healthy Digestion from Old Pueblo Acupuncture.

LET’S EXPLORE WAYS TO ENJOY BETTER DIGESTION!

Chewing: The First Step to Healthy Digestion

Chewing properly allows your stomach to work more efficiently to break down your food faster. The food is broken down from larger particles into smaller particles that are more easily digested for higher nutritional bioavailability.  The enzymes in your saliva start to break down your food, making digestion a lot easier for both your stomach and small intestine. Better absorption + better digestion = better health!

Raw versus Cooked Foods

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the digestive system needs to be warmed with properly cooked foods to help with the transportation and transformation of food and fluids into the vital energy (Qi) needed for nutrient absorption. Excessive cold, raw, iced and frozen foods slow this process and can lead to excessive gas, bloating, cramping, and food stagnation.

However, a small amount of raw and fermented foods can provide needed digestive enzymes for the biochemical processes in our digestive tract. It is always important to keep a balance in food preparation, not only in your daily diet but also with seasonal variation based upon availability and climate.

The Human Micro-biome: A Key to Optimal Health.

It’s now quite clear that the type and quantity of micro-organisms in your gut interact with your body in ways that can either prevent or encourage the development of many diseases. Healthy gut flora is also a critical component for effective digestion.

Probiotics are essential for optimal digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. They also help your body produce vitamins, absorb minerals, and aid in the elimination of toxins. Great sources of probiotics are fermented and pickled foods, raw milk yogurt or kefir, Kimchee or a high-quality probiotic capsule

Don’t forget the Fiber!

Fiber refers to the indigestible portion of plant foods and it is often missing in the largely refined standard American diet. There’s no shortage of research showing how fiber may boost your health. Fiber can help decrease numerous digestive symptoms, regulates blood sugar levels, has heart-healthy benefits, and can help with weight management. The very best sources are plant-based such as vegetable, fruit, seed, and nut fibers.

All in all, eating a healthy diet is more about choosing strong, foundational, science-based concepts, and less about strict diets and menus and counting calories.

Vibrant Health always comes back to the simple concept of Vibrant Eating!

Bon Appetite!

SUPPORT CELLULAR HEALTH TO ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE!

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is a technology that has been used internationally for several decades on both humans and animals for healing and improving health in a variety of cases.  It has been the subject of extensive research that has acknowledged its safe and effective use. Science has demonstrated how the application of PEMF can restore the body’s natural ability to stressed and damaged tissues.

Bio-compatible Cellular Exercise provided by PEMF recharges your cells and is beneficial for virtually every health issue because, with regular use, it can help to provide the energy necessary to reestablish healthy cells.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any further questions about our PEMF treatment options at our NEW Tucson PEMF “Cellular Exercise” Center.  (520) 722-9101

We are offering PEMF as a separate service from acupuncture.

SUPPORT the Healthy, Natural Function of Your Cells!

Would you like to:

Alleviate Pain? Reduce Inflammation? Stimulate Healing? Treat Injury? Relieve Fatigue? Reduce Stress? Increase Relaxation? Achieve Deeper Sleep?

Disease and pain manifest when impaired nutrient flow and waste accumulation inhibits the cell’s natural repair cycle. When your cells drop their electrical charge to a certain level, they become sick and so does your body. Pain and discomfort are simply the signs of cellular imbalance and disease.

FACT: Chronic disease and pain are always defined by a low electrical charge. The body can heal almost anything with proper nutrients as well as a vibrant electrical charge. Restoring these key elements are vital for healthy bioelectric cellular metabolism. It is the foundation of achieving pain-free, optimal health.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) is a revolutionary therapy gives your cells the power to: increase circulation, expel cellular waste, absorb more nutrients, rebalance electrical charge and reduce pain. Cellular Health is Physical Health!

YOUR BODY IS ELECTROMAGNETIC!

Every signal our brains send out to our bodies is through electromagnetic signals. Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF) therapy is a treatment approach that relies upon specific electromagnetic fields targeting the body at the cellular level.

The main purpose of PEMF is to stimulate cellular repair and it can be used in a number of health care applications, including pain management and to amplify the healing process of the body.

SUPPORT CELLULAR HEALTH TO ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE!

Don’t hesitate to call us with any further questions about our PEMF treatment options at our NEW Tucson PEMF “Cellular Exercise” Center.  (520) 722-9101

There are many ways to adapt to injury and chronic pain. You can…

  • Limit activity
  • Favor the injury
  • Rest more, do less
  • Use pain relievers, medications, and anti-inflammatories

While these adaptations may temporarily dull the pain, they cost you productivity, sleep and can eventually begin to gnaw away at your health in general. Not to mention side effects such as weight gain, dependency on medications, stress, and inactivity.

Hard as it is to believe, chronic pain is often traced to a tight muscle and the subsequent structural fallout. Fortunately, a tight muscle is not difficult to correct.

A tight muscle is a bit of a con artist. You don’t even know you have been robbed until something is missing. As a subversive intruder, the tight muscle bypasses your early warning system. Over time you notice that you are not operating at top capacity & optimal efficiency. Then one day, there is pain and chronic tension and lack of range of motion. The tight muscle has intruded, affecting your structure, your function, and even your day.

What happens when your muscle is tight?

A tight muscle is actually a short & weak muscle. It doesn’t know how to relax and it tires quickly. It recovers slowly from exertion and contracts excessively. Ultimately, this short and weak muscle cannot generate the force needed to work properly and recruits other muscles in the neighborhood. The intruder has now set off the alarm system and you move to the next level, better known as chronic pain syndrome.

What does your tight muscle do?

Chronically tight muscles create strain, pain, and inflammation and will lead to compensatory patterns in your body. This is the set-up for trauma and injury, along with further pain, swelling, weakness, and reduced range of motion. Symptoms of numbness and tingling can follow due to nerve compression. Eventually, joint stress occurs that can lead to degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis, bone spur formation, chronic inflammation, and disc problems. The intruder has now invited the neighbors and the block party has begun.

Fix the pain by fixing the problem.
Using acupuncture to treat chronic pain activates your body’s inherent self-healing mechanisms. Tight muscles relax, blood flow increases, inflammation decreases, and proper function is restored. After an acupuncture therapy program, many clients report that their pain had diminished or vanished without unwanted side effects and they have significantly increased:

  • Range of Motion
  • Activity level
  • Energy
  • Sleep
  • Sense of Well-Being

Call us at Old Pueblo Acupuncture to schedule a treatment. (520) 722.9101

We can help you break the pain cycle, accelerate recovery and regain your quality of life.

In an official report, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials, the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the following pain conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:

  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • sciatica
  • tennis elbow
  • knee pain
  • osteoarthritis
  • shoulder pain
  • sprains
  • facial pain
  • headache
  • dental pain
  • TMJ pain
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • stroke

“ Living with chronic back and hip pain was an everyday occurrence for me but when the pain became too great to ignore, I sought out acupuncture. The treatments provided dramatic results and a welcomed relief after years of taking medications for my pain. Best of all, I am able to do the things that I love and don’t have to live with daily pain” – DB

Seasonal change is officially here in Tucson! The days are shorter, the weather is finally cooler and we are all enjoying more active time outside. The energy shift is palpable as we jump into the fall season and begin to do more things in both work and play.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, whenever there is a seasonal change, the energy of our body shifts as well. Sometimes the transition can leave us feeling somewhat fatigued, sluggish, and even out of balance. We can over-do, over-extend, and over-commit with too many changes, and that puts demands on our physical and emotional bodies. This is the perfect storm for seasonal colds, flu and allergies, increased physical stress or even the set-up for manifesting a strain or injury.

Acupuncture can assist the mind and body to ‘wake-up’, easing the transition into fall. Research shows that it improves your ability to deal with stress, boosts energy levels, supports detoxification, treats those chronic aches and pains and stimulates the immune system to prevent seasonal illness.

Acupuncture works in much the same way as getting your car serviced. A little prevention can help you avoid all those costly repairs. Your body will benefit from a well-deserved acupuncture series so you can feel your best this fall.

For any questions regarding scheduling, continuing care, and/or fall tune-ups; please call or email us at Old Pueblo Acupuncture.

“We recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry…RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.” — 2017 5G Scientific Appeal (signed by more than 200 scientists and doctors from 35 countries) Most of you have experienced the power of acupuncture in your treatment sessions at Old Pueblo Acupuncture. What the Ancients called the mysterious Qi or the Vital Life Force of the human body is the bio-electric flow of ions that are produced by cellular respiration and metabolism. How do 5G cellular networks and EMF Radiation affect your energy and your body and overall health? Read on to discover the consequences of this technology and make your voices heard in our Tucson community.

Cumulative daily radiation exposure is associated with serious health effects.

“Eects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being.” – EMF Scientific Appeal

WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON Here, There and Everywhere??

Nationwide, communities are being told by wireless companies that it is necessary to build “small cell” wireless facilities in neighborhoods on streetlight and utility poles in order to offer 5G, a new technology that will connect the Internet of Things (IoT). At the local, state, and federal level, new legislation, and new zoning aim to streamline the installation of these 5G “small cell” antennas in public rights-of-way.

The Radiation from small cells is not small: Wireless antennas emit microwaves — non-ionizing radio-frequency radiation — and essentially function as cell towers. Each installation can have over a thousand antennas that are transmitting simultaneously.

Millions of small cells to be built in front yards: The Federal Communications Commission estimates that millions of these wireless transmitters will be built in our rights-of-way, directly in front of our homes.

5G will add to — not replace — our current wireless technology: 5G will not only utilize current 3G and 4G wireless frequencies already in use but also add higher frequency — submillimeter and millimeter waves — in order to transmit data at super-fast speeds.

Community authority is overruled: Communities are being stripped of their right to make decisions about this new technology. ”Streamlining” means almost automatic approval. Public notice and public hearings are being eliminated. Even if every homeowner on the block opposes the antennas on their street, the opposition will be disregarded.

Scientists worldwide are calling for a halt to the 5G Roll-out: Over 200 scientists and doctors issued a declaration calling for a moratorium on the increase of 5G cell antennas citing human health effects and impacts to wildlife.

Cumulative daily radiation exposure poses serious public health risks: Peer-reviewed, published science indicates that exposures to wireless radiation can increase cancer risk, alter brain development and damage sperm. Most people are unaware that wireless technology was never tested for long-term safety, that children are more vulnerable and that the accumulated scientific evidence shows harm. ACUPUNCTURE & HERBAL MEDICINE FOR SEASONAL ALLERGIES

Commonly called hay fever or allergic rhinitis, a seasonal allergy is an allergic reaction to a trigger that is typically only present for part of the year, such as spring or fall. Pollens that are spread by the wind are usually the main cause of seasonal allergies. People who are allergic to pollen are also often sensitive to mold, ragweed, dust mites, and animal dander.

About 26 million Americans endure chronic seasonal allergies, while the number of people with milder symptoms may be as high as 40 million, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Most symptoms become apparent within 5 or 10 minutes of exposure to the allergens and typically include sneezing, dry and unproductive coughing, wheezing, itchy sensations on the roof of the mouth or at the back of the throat, swollen sinuses leading to a stuffy nose and headaches, a runny nose, itching, watery and reddened eyes as well as reduced sense of smell and taste, and disturbed sleep.

While there are many Western medications to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, these treatments can cause unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness and immune system suppression as well as an over-reliance on medications. These side effects have drawn many people to search for an alternative approach, such as acupuncture and Oriental medicine to manage their allergies. One study recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that acupuncture can significantly relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine focuses on restoring balance to the body, improving immune system function, helping to relieve sinus pain, reducing histamine response, enhancing blood circulation, and promoting overall health and well being. It is a natural therapy that does not require the use of medication and is highly effective in the treatment of seasonal allergies.

Happy New Year from Old Pueblo Acupuncture!

The New Year brings new beginnings and new priorities to our lives. We look toward what we want to bring into our daily lives and what we want to let go of.  For many of us, we want to provide greater balance and optimal health as the foundation of our individual journeys in 2019 and beyond.

Here at Old Pueblo Acupuncture, we are here to partner with you in your health goals so that radiant health is not just a resolution but truly a priority in the year to come! We look forward to seeing and hearing from you and making 2019 the best year yet! – Sena, Matt and Shoshana

TOP FIVE REASONS TO BRING EXERCISE INTO YOUR LIFE! If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to start an exercise program. Here are five great reasons to get started!

1. Shed those excess holiday pounds
Don’t neglect exercise as an essential part of any weight loss program. Do a combination of aerobic activity and strength training. Staying active will also help to prevent regaining weight. Studies show that people who get regular physical activity are more likely to lose weight and keep it off for the long term.

2. Relieve stress and improve your mood
Physically active people tend to have lower rates of depression and anxiety than sedentary people. In Chinese Medicine, getting regular physical activity is an important part of preventing “Liver Qi stagnation”, which is a physical manifestation of pent-up stress and emotions. Exercise with a friend to gain even more of a mood boost!

3. Prevent colds and flus
Regular moderate exercise contributes to a healthy immune system. A new study published last month in Scientific Reports provides evidence that working out could help us fight off colds and other infections.

4. Regulate your blood sugar
Taking a walk after meals can help clear glucose from the bloodstream as it is taken up by the muscles. A recent study showed that a 15 minute walk after each meal was more effective in improving daily blood sugar levels than a single 45 minute walk done at another time.

5. Live longer!
A study conducted in Europe and published in 2015 showed that a sedentary lifestyle increased the risk of early death, even in people who were not overweight. In fact, lack of exercise was found to be “twice as deadly” as obesity. The same study found that just 20 minutes of brisk walking per day can significantly lessen the risk of early death.

All of us would like to move towards better health and wellness in our lives and often that involves taking a closer look at our current diet, nutritional choices and ongoing habits. To make lasting changes for ourselves, let’s start with using our Food as Medicine.

Many people search for the “perfect diet”, but vibrant health is really more about lifestyle choices and foundational nutritional concepts. Each of us have different challenges and health goals, but we find that many of these basic principles can apply to all of us!

LET’S EXPLORE WAYS TO ENJOY BETTER HEALTH!

Eat Organic! Herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, agricultural chemicals, growth hormones, GMO’s, colorings, dyes, synthetic agents, stabilizers and fillers are all added to our food chain. Try to eliminate toxins in your food as much as possible. Shop locally for the freshest options!

Eat Lots of Vegetables! Low in calories and packed with nutrient density and fiber, vegetables are always a perfect choice for vibrant health! Be sure to always prepare them in a healthy manner!

Watch Out for High Glycemic Fruits! Whole fruit in it’s original form is lower in fructose than dried fruit, jams, fruit bars and commercial fruit juices. Berries, apples, pears and grapefruit are some of the lowest in natural sugars.

Buy Clean Protein! Pasture-raised, free-range, organic protein sources have higher omega 3’s and increased nutritional value than meats from concentrated agricultural feed operations. (CAFO’s). Plus there are no antibiotics and growth hormones, and it’s easier on the planet’s resources.

Choose Healthy Fats! The body needs healthy fats for the brain, hormones, nervous system function and more! Enjoy olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, organic dairy (if not allergic) nuts, seeds, avocados and olives. Eliminate refined seed oils, margarine and other trans-fats which are inflammatory.

Say NO to Sugar & Refined Carbohydrates! These are the stepping stones to chronic illness, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia. Eliminate as much sugar and refined carbohydrates as possible on a daily basis. Eliminate boxed and packaged foods that contain excess sugars.

Don’t Eat Anything You Can’t Pronounce! More than 2,500 chemical substances are intentionally added to foods to modify flavor, color, stability, texture or cost. An estimated 12,000 substances are used in food-packaging materials, processing aids, pesticide residues and drugs given to animals.

Add in Fermented Foods! Beneficial healthy bacteria in the gut is the foundation of good health. Fermented foods are loaded in key enzymes, plenty of fiber and help to increase bioavailability of nutrients & minerals. Research shows that they improve digestion, immune function and brain health.

Make Your Own Bone Broth! Enhances healthy digestion, inhibits infection, reduces joint pain & inflammation, heals inflamed intestines and promotes strong healthy bones, skin and hair. Truly a beneficial elixir!

Identify Your Food Allergens! Many people have undiagnosed food allergies which can affect digestion, seasonal allergies, asthma, skin issues, energy levels, headaches, immune function and more.

Drink More Water! We hear this so often and still we forget! Water detoxifies our bodies, helps nutrients enter into our cells and enhances cellular metabolism. Be sure to filter your water from chemicals and heavy metals.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, Keep MOVING! A healthy dose of exercise and activities that you enjoy are part of your health & wellness plan. Do what you love and the rest will follow!
